When did Saturday Night Live first make a big splash with presidential election humor?

I am doing a project for a government cl concerning political humor. I know SNL first aired in 1975, but I need to know when they started their presidential election humor skits. There was an election in 1976, but I can't find anything showing they did or did not produce skits about the candidate like they have been doing in recent elections. Any help would be appreciated!
