Am I sabotaging this or am I just over thinking the situation?????

So there's this guy that I always thought was cute who worked at the grocery store near my house. I happened to find him on Myspace and we've been talking for about a week and I gave him my number. so Wednesday he asked me on a date and I agreed but then last minute canceled on him because it was raining really bad and my parents were being nosy AND I dyed my hair and it came out an icky green.. he said it was fine and that we could go out the next day but then canceled that and said we could go out Friday or Saturday... but after that I haven't really talked to him much.. I'm really weary about these things after past experiences have gone bad and I tend to keep my distance and talk to them only when it seems like they want to talk. am I sabotaging this possible relationship by not being more outgoing and talkative or am I over thinking it????
