Why do teachers feel it necessary to teach the difference between a simile and a metaphor?

I think this just falls under learning about writing, literature, and the English language. My English cl taught us not only metaphors and similes, but anaphoras, synecdoche, metonymy, asyndeton, and polysyndeton. We learn it because it teaches us to understand truly great literature and how a good writer conveys ideas.
